What we help with

Unsuitable investment advice

If you were advised to invest in something that did not match your circumstances, goals or attitude to risk, for example too much risk, too much in one place, or a complex or hard-to-access product, you may have a complaint. This is not about investments that simply went down in value; it is about whether the advice was suitable for you.

Does this sound familiar?

What people usually tell us

Any one of these may be worth a conversation. None of them decides anything on its own.

Nobody properly asked about your goals, your attitude to risk, or how much you could afford to lose.
You were placed in higher-risk investments than you were comfortable with.
Most or all of your money went into the firm’s own funds or products.
You needed access to your money but it was placed somewhere illiquid or penalised.
Your circumstances changed, through retirement, illness or divorce, and nothing about the portfolio changed.

Being straight with you

What this is not

Investments falling in value is not, on its own, grounds for a complaint. The question is whether the advice was right for you when it was given.

Being straight with you

Not everyone who asks has a complaint worth pursuing, and we would rather say so early than take on a case that goes nowhere. Many firms are also contacting affected customers and refunding them directly, for free. If that route is open to you, we will tell you to take it.

If we look at it

What helps us assess it

You do not need all of this to get in touch. If you no longer have these documents, we can usually request them from the firm on your behalf.

The suitability report explaining why the investments were recommended
Any fact-find or risk questionnaire you completed
Statements showing what you were actually invested in
Notes or correspondence about what you told the adviser you wanted

These are general descriptions. Whether you actually have a valid complaint depends on your own circumstances and the evidence, which we will assess with no obligation. We do not give investment, tax or legal advice.

There is no cost and no obligation. If we do not think you have a case, or you would be better off going direct, we will tell you.

You do not have to use a claims management company. You can complain directly to the firm and the Financial Ombudsman Service for free.
